If you’ve owned your pool for a few years, you may have just gotten through the winter using an inexpensive winter pool cover (view our selection here) to keep debris out of the pool through the offseason. While we certainly appreciate a good winter cover (we sell them after all), there are some very good reasons to make the jump to a full blown pool safety cover (our selection can be found at  http://www.swimtownpools.com/pool-safety-covers-s/293.htm). So if you’ve considered getting one, let’s run down a short list of some of the better reasons to get yourself a safety cover.

  • Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children under the age of 14 in the United States. Why risk allowing a loved one or even a pet falling through a winter cover, becoming entangled and getting injured or worse?
  • Durability. Winter covers don’t usually last that long. Over the course of ten years you might end up going through 4, 5 or even 10 (we know people that get a new one every year). While the one time cost is cheap, that adds up over time.
  • A tight fit. Obviously, a safety cover is locked down and solid enough to bare some weight. Unlike a winter cover which is clipped on or loosely tied down, your safety cover isn’t going to blow away on a windy fall day or come partially detached and fill your pool with leaves and debris. Whether you choose a solid safety cover (shop here) or a mest safety cover (here), you’ll end up with less junk in your pool when you open it back up in the spring.
